Palate Portfolio: The Fount, Selfridges

The King of cocktails, Ryan Chetiyawardana has just launched his new summer menu at The Fount, Selfridges. If you didn’t know so already, Ryan Chetiyawardana is an absolute legend not only in London’s bar scene, but globally as well. Ryan has been bartending for a solid 13 years and launched his baby, White Lyan in 2013. This was the first bar of it’s kind to use no perishable ingredients (fruit and ice) as well as only using his own brand of spirits, syrups and cordials. All drinks were made from scratch in-house and were with no doubt still made to absolute perfection. Are you still doubting his creative ingenuity? If so, read on.

It was a lovely Friday afternoon; I had just finished post-work draanks with the interns and was making my way to Oxford Street. Considering that I was buzzing with excitement (and slightly because of the booze), the walk there wasn’t one bit draining and felt like minutes. I entered Selfridges, making my way past the makeup hall, then the food hall, finally entering the new luxury accessories hall, where the Fount awaited. The Fount is located in the heart of the new luxury accessories hall, and is such a beautiful, exquisite and elegant place to unwind and bring on the weekend, especially after such a long week of work. After admiring the stunning 14-seater bar, I took my seat.

Once sat at the bar I was immediately handed a ‘Superfly Tonic’, which is an alcohol-free drink on the menu (ours spiked of course). The ‘Superfly’ is the result of a collaboration between firefly drinks and Ryan. It’s a fruity, light and cooling beverage, that’s made up of a blend of arena, berries, kola-nut and cascara – essentially the perfect summer beverage! (Congrats Ryan!)

I then proceeded to flick through the cocktails list and boy was I spoilt for choice. Everything sounded so incredible, which left me lost because I didn’t know where to start. I was recommended the ‘Picnic Fizz’ to start, which was made up of Mr Lyan Cream gin, strawberry cordial, Fount tea bitters and Selfridges Selection Brut Champagne – how incredible does that sound? The drink was summery, fruity, fun and luxurious and I really did enjoy every bit of it. I then moved on to try ‘The Citrus Grove’, which was 100% the MVP of the night. It was made up of lemon and lemon thyme vodka, Italicus Bergamot Rosolio, verbena and the surprise in the middle: citrus sorbet. This drink had the perfect balance of sweet and sour and the sorbet in the centre was an irresistible surprise. Not only was the drink given a first for creativity, but it was also an incredibly dangerous drink because it tasted so darn delicious.

As well as other delicious beverages, we also tried the nibbles on the menu as well. First up was the olive dip with crustino which was so delicious (we really fell for the dip). We also enjoyed some of the freshest oysters 3-ways; bloody mary, ceviche and pickled, which were unique and heavenly. The nibbles paired perfectly with the drinks and made the experience just that much more enjoyable.

Overall, the experience was amazing! It’s a beautiful bar in one of the most beautiful, buzzing and exciting locations in London. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a few drinks with your girls or to break up all the shopping and damage done on Oxford Street. The drinks are so delicious (I’d 100% recommend the Citrus Grove), exciting and fresh, making this bar a new favourite in London.
